Our Beginnings

In August 1994, Wes and Beth Gestring began the Christian Family Life Ministry in Lesotho.

This was in response to a felt need by Basotho married couples for help in strengthening their family life through learning and applying Biblical principles to their marriages.

The goal of this ministry was to strengthen Christian marriages in Lesotho and thereby strengthen churches in Lesotho as well. The Becoming One marriage enrichment Bible study was used towards accomplishing this goal.

Rob and Marian Vermey were a Dutch couple who also had a burden for strengthening Basotho marriages.  They were part of the very first Becoming One group lead by Wes and Beth Gestring and subsequently led their own Becoming One groups.

In their first group were Nelson and Rosemary Matsie, the present Directors of Christian Family Life Ministry Africa (CFLMAfrica).

The photos below show the rich history of Becoming One in Lesotho, which still carries in Lesotho, South Africa and Tanzania. Swipe left and right to see them all.

The Matsies and other couples then started to lead their own groups in Lesotho.  The power of 2 Timothy 2:2 was a reality:

“and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”

Translation of Becoming One into Sesotho

The arduous task of translating Becoming One into Sesotho began in 1997.  This involved the translation by Pastor Dolphin Monese, proof-reading by two University English lecturers from the National University of Lesotho, and computer input by Tseko Nyesemane.

The final step was back translation in which Tseko would read the Sesotho and verbally translate it back into English as Wes listened and confirmed it was correct, word by word, sentence by sentence.

Finally, Ho Ba Bonngoeng was finished (Becoming One in Sesotho)
